Projects / Beech Cottage
A new-build detached house for an artist’s family home. The client’s brief was to create a family home in a modernist style with a connected large double height studio.

With the long site running along an East / West axis, the idea of making use of this by splitting the main house, garage and studio into independent boxes linked along this axis with a central spine was explored. The fragmented forms respond to the sun path, enabling lots of morning and evening sunlight into the main house and in contrast, predominantly uniform northerly light into the studio via a wrap-over roof light.

Heavy glazing to the ends of the main house compared with relative enclosure to the studio gives an introvert / extrovert dichotomy to the elements.

The spine serves as a visual and physical link but also works as a service zone providing the spaces with light, storage and circulation.
