We secured full planning approval for 2 new contemporary homes on the site of a bungalow on this leafy drive on Lawnswood Drive, bordering countryside to the West of Stourbridge.

Careful siting and layout design has enabled generous building footprints whilst working around the existing trees so they are all preserved.

Natural materials and simple lines help the building nestle into the wooded plots. Glazed areas and strategically placed ‘cut-outs’ allow an abundance of natural light into the buildings and afford views out to the private grounds.

The owners of this detached house in Lichfield wanted to extend but in a sensitive way so that important details of the existing house were not lost. They also wanted to re-evaluate the existing internal layout to create more rooms with good natural light, while adding storage and a better connection to the garden.

Together, we developed the brief and designed a two-storey side extension to house a new guest bedroom on the ground floor with a master bedroom suite above. Then, a glazed single-storey extension was added at the rear, incorporating a split-level family space and kitchen with bespoke storage, and a large living room. Both spaces were given glazed doors that lead out to the garden.

We updated the heating system, electrics and all bathrooms, and added insulation where possible. We renewed the front door in oak and the windows in slim-framed aluminium, and a new detached garage was also built to the side.

We are proposing a modern, glazed pavilion which will house a swimming pool. This extension will effectively infill the space between the two projecting wings at the rear of the building. Whilst the proposals are deliberately modern and simple, design cues have been taken from the original building. Through the use of slim-framed glazing, views through to the original structure will be retained.

A section of unused basement under the terrace will be developed with a spiral staircase providing a link to swimming pool. The exterior of the property will be re-landscapced with new terracing and planting.

Originally built in 1689 as a 4 storey property, much of the building was destroyed by fire in the 19th century and was subsequently restored to 2 storeys. More recently the hall had been divided into 3 separate dwellings. Our proposals will restore the original characteristics of the building, and will respectfully enhance and restore the space into a single coherent dwelling.
