Arthur Road, Edgbaston
This project involved the sensitive extension and modernisation of a 1960s family home in Edgbaston, located within the Calthorpe Estate Conservation Area. The brief was to transform a series of dark, disconnected spaces into a light-filled home with improved flow and a stronger relationship to the garden, while respecting the character and planning constraints of the conservation area.
The existing layout suffered from cramped, poorly lit rooms and awkward circulation, particularly from the main hallway, which limited movement and natural light throughout the ground floor.
Our design introduces a contemporary glazed rear extension that opens the house to the garden and creates a seamless connection between internal living spaces and new external areas. Internally, the ground floor was reconfigured to improve circulation, increase natural daylight, and create clear, intuitive routes through the home.
The result is a bright, flexible living environment that supports modern family life while enhancing the architectural character of the original 1960s house and responding sensitively to its conservation area setting.
